Featured Organization: The Door

The Door - A Center of Alternatives, Inc. is a multi-faceted nonprofit organization that empowers more than 10,000 disconnected youth in New York City to reach their greatest potential through a variety of comprehensive services, including reproductive health care and education, mental health counseling, GED classes, housing support, legal services, career development, and more. Since 1972, The Door has provided young people with the tools to be successful in every aspect of their lives, including school and work. The Door’s Adolescent Health Center provides reproductive health care services include peer education, contraceptive counseling, a full range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception, checks-ups for both males and females, pregnancy testing, STD testing, counseling, and treatment, and HIV testing, counseling, and referrals.  In addition, the health center offers dermatology, nutrition counseling, and dental care services. Providing these services allow youth to practice safer sex, take care of their bodies, and lead healthier, more productive lives.

  • Adolescent Health Center Text Line: Teens are able to text any questions they have about pregnancy, STDs, anatomy, and safe sex. Text responses are free and confidential, and answered by trained health education staff.
  • Membership: It is free and easy for youth between ages 12 and 21 to become a member. Drop in-hours are available for runaway and homeless youth.
